The five steps to understanding Matrix

The Matrix Fan Coil System

FreeCast Wireless Communication

To take full advantage of Matrix, it is necessary to establish a conventional MS/TP RS485 network between all fan coils in convenient groups of units. These groups (of up to 40 units) known as trunks, might be whole floors, the external and internal zones of a floor or perhaps the various tenant areas once a building has been let. With the communication lines established, simply connect the Ability wireless engineering tool at any convenient point, run the ‘FreeCast’ software on a ‘WiFi’ enabled laptop and you can easily adjust any aspect of the strategy. Providing the laptop stays within 'wireless range' of the router, all functions can be accessed from anywhere; even another floor.

'FreeCast' - Strategy adjustment made easy

The concept is so simple but the benefits are many!

As everything is pre-set at the factory, in theory no adjustment is required at the fan coil level. However, should a strategy change be required, i.e. a design water flow rate, or air volume this can simply be accomplished using the engineering tool.

Time consuming commissioning is a thing of the past

With time scales being ever pushed, if any aspect of a project overruns, commissioning is one of the first items to be truncated on a project. Matrix II removes much of the time consuming aspect of air and water balancing, and leaves a simple checking exercise. This in turns means the FCUs can be turned on a lot later than they would normally be, very often negating the need for a filter clean or replacement for handover.

Networking, why pay more?

Many of our customers now purchase RS485 to IP routers with Matrix fan coil units from Ability. This allows them to setup the FCU network, and test using it themselves before calling system integrators in to hook up the BMS. This not only saves time as the network can be put in at the same time as the power, but gives the customer the piece of mind that the network is up and running correctly.
